History
Beginnings of Clinical Center were in first inpatients
health service in Sarajevo, founded in 1866 by Ottoman
Empire Governor Topal Osman Pasha founded by the Gazi
Husref-bays Vakuf.
Present location for most of hospitals of Clinical Center
is in the part of Sarajevo named Kosevo. That location
was established in 1894 and that year is considered as
a founding year of Clinical Center in Sarajevo.
Since 1894 Clinical Center, like the other similar institutions
worldwide, developed in all specialties. Most sophisticated
methods in labor, education and scientific work were applied
on level of multidisciplinary teaching hospital.
During the aggression on Bosnia and Herzegovina and
the siege of Sarajevo, years 1992-1996, Clinical Center
was shelled daily, regardless of hospital markings and
knowledge that it was health institution. Clinic for Obstetrics
and Gynaecology and Pediatric Clinic were totally destroyed
by shelling. Institute for Physiatrics in Iliidza was
destroyed, too. Institute for Vascular Diseases and Psychiatric
hospital were devastated during retreat of aggressor from
Jagomir suburb. All Clinics in Koševo sustained enormous
damages bitted by more than 350 shells.
Total damages are estimated on 34.2% of capacities before the war, which count 1130 beds or 76 millions DM.
During the shellings of Clinical Center, 5 patients were killed, 19 wounded. 51 employee of Clinical Center were killed during the siege of Sarajevo.
During the aggression staff and patients were transferred from destroyed departments into the operational ones and continued they activities but in a reduced and rationalized capacities.
In the period from 1992-1995, 2597 employees left the
Clinical Center. 2271 employees stayed and worked through
the war and with 772 newly employed. Clinical Center has
at the moment 3043 employees. 21% of employees are non-medical
staff.
